God of This City Worship Conference
When: September 11th and 12th, 2009
Where: Cheyenne Civic Center
Speaker: Linda Dillow
Worship: Shannon Wexelberg
MC: Kathy Cordell
Attendance: About 900

The God of This City Worship Conference was the first large event produced and sponsored by Women of Worship. For months prior to the conference women from all over Cheyenne prepared for the conference in prayer. The Women of Worship team consisted of 35 women representing 15 different churches spread over 10 different teams.

Author and speaker Linda Dillow presented the keynote address. Her message about leading a life of 24/7 worship was presented over 3 sessions. Linda’s message followed her book called Satisfy My Thirsty Soul, For I am Desperate For Your Presence. She spoke about finding deeper intimacy with Christ through bowing our entire life an act of sacrificial worship. Psalm 63:1-8 was the theme Scripture for the conference:

O God, you are my God,
       earnestly I seek you;
       my soul thirsts for you,
       my body longs for you,
       in a dry and weary land
       where there is no water.
I have seen you in the sanctuary
       and beheld your power and your glory.
Because your love is better than life,
       my lips will glorify you.
I will praise you as long as I live,
       and in your name I will lift up my hands.
My soul will be satisfied as with the richest of foods;
       with singing lips my mouth will praise you.
On my bed I remember you;
       I think of you through the watches of the night.
Because you are my help,
       I sing in the shadow of your wings.
My soul clings to you;
       your right hand upholds me.

The Saturday morning session ended with an emotional procession to the altar where every woman identified her ‘Isaac’ and came forward with a stone as a remembrance of her sacrifice. Many women were touched by this act of ‘laying down their Isaac’. One woman said this:

“God was so present during the laying down of stones. The stone I picked up was so unique!  I have never in my life seen a stone like this before.  It was in the shape of a person.  I still question in my mind if that stone was hand-picked for me and then the Lord miraculously placed it in my hand.  My sacrifice was laying down my family and I still can't believe the stone looked just like a person! God is so personal.”

WOW also offered an optional Saturday afternoon session. Linda Dillow spoke on the topic of Intimate Issues: a discussion of godly sexual intimacy within marriage. She discussed the biblical reasons why God gave us the gift of sex and how we as women have not fully opened the gift He gave. A couple women shared of their personal experience of how God healed them sexually. It is not often we get together in a room with 500 of our closest friends and discuss this topic but Linda delicately weaves the truth of Scripture with this sensitive subject.

Shannon Wexelberg led worship for the conference. Her gorgeous voice and deep lyrics provided the backdrop to fully experience the presence of God. Shannon opened with Sing to The King and the AIM teen flag team from Calvary Chapel helped bring high-energy worship to our opening. Shannon sang several of her own songs and shared of bowing her pain through her experiences of infertiliy and the near-loss of her husband in a motorcycle accident. She also got together with a band from Cheyenne and finished the conference with a live performance of The God of This City.

We do believe that greater things are still to come, greater things are still to be done in our city! The God of This City Worship Conference was only the first of many women’s events that will be sponsored by WOW to join the people and churches or our region to worship the Lord as one voice! We are excited about all that God wants to do in our corner of Wyoming as He continues to pour His spirit out over us.

Comments from The God of This City Worship Conference:

  • I am so grateful for all the Lord did last weekend in Cheyenne.  I came home with my heart full and so in awe of God's intentional visitation!  It was awesome.  The WOW team did a superb job coordinating it all and hosting the event!  I would never have known that this was the first ever WOW event!

  • Our God is sure AWESOME!  Thanks for being obedient and bringing God the glory in this city. I always went elsewhere for conferences and retreats and knowing we can learn and worship together as women in our own city is such a blessing.

  • The women of this city are suddenly on fire and they are realizing what has been missing here for far too long.  A little thing called ‘worship’ has invaded them and I pray many lives begin to sing of His love to a hurting world.

  • “WOW!!!! The conference was moving and informative! This has inspired me to get connected and grow deeper with God. I can not thank you enough for the time and effort it took to get this together! I believe many souls were shaken and I can't wait to see what is to come!

  • What a blessing your conference was for me and many more! When I left Cheyenne in 1984 I swore I would never return…but I did! Cheyenne is spiritually different now and it was a wonderful experience to be able to worship with so many ladies in our community. Yes, the City of Cheyenne has come a long way, yet there is ALWAYS more to be done.
